2009 Summer National Senior Games at Stanford, August 1–15

Seems like half the people I swim with in the US Masters Swimming program here in Tuolumne County are heading to the 2009 Summer National Senior Games at Stanford this weekend. Folks were practicing their starts, sprints, and of course half the pool has been tapering their practices all week. I suspect some records will be broken in the next few days!

I’m hoping to make the 3-plus-hour trek to Palo Alto at least one day during the competition. I’ll post some photos here if I do indeed make the trip.

Approximately 10,000 athletes from all 50 states are expected to compete in 25 sports, including swimming, at this event. The 2009 Senior Games is the largest multi-sport event for men and women age 50 and over.

The National Senior Games Association promotes healthy aging in men and women over 50 through education, fitness and sport. The Senior Games encourage the participants to stay active and to continue to accept challenges, both physically and mentally.

The swimming competition will be held from August 1-August 5, 2009. You can find the swimming schedule here.
