Deb, I'm sorry I can't personally offer advice about ocean swimming. I've tried swimming (vs. bobbing, body surfing, boogie boarding) in the ocean a few times, but I am not a fan of the cotton-mouth and itchy lips from too much saltwater. And I too get queasy in rough seas. I have contacted other Master Swimmers for their advice. I promise to post their responses. GOOD LUCK in your tri!!!

Keep your mind focused on "there is nothing in the water that wants to hurt me". If you find yourself thinking about what could be lurking out of view, stop. Avoid movies like 3D Piranha! I find that wearing a wetsuite helps me feel more protected.

Sorry for the potentially inappropriateness of this message, but another great benefit of open water swimming is being able to pee whenever you want. Sometimes it's essential to keep yourself warm in a wetsuit too. Of course some courtesy is probably in order with regards to currents. Sometime you may want to post about swimming in the ocean versus lake. I've mostly swam in oceans and you have to deal with current, chop, the spookiness of the deep and potential brushes with nature.

One thing I absolutely love about summer-- lake swims. Like you said, it's great to get out of the indoor pool and get out into the sun.
