Great Swim Coaches Are Worth Their Weight In Fins/Goggles/Speedos/Snorkles

After my first attempt at a triathlon a couple of years ago, I realized I could use a little help with my swimming skills. I found the nearest swimming pool and signed up for a Masters Swimming 101 course. I was fortunate enough to have found great coaches at the Tuolumne County Aquatics Center. My 101 coach – Dave Fairfield – has an infectious and genuine enthusiasm, a good-hearted nature, and he is one very big reason I signed up to become a U.S. Masters Swimmer. He continues to teach at the pool and is never too busy to offer support, instruction and encouragement to new swimmers and long-time athletes alike. I ran into him at the pool today and snapped these photos:

Sounds like a great coach! Maybe you can return the favor and hint at him to get himself higher in the water. The water level should be around his eyebrows/top of his goggles, rather than having his head completely submerged.

Thanks for the comment! Keep them coming. To be fair to Coach Dave, we were playing around in the pool with a variety of camera angles and poses, and he was not swimming at full tilt. Dave is no slouch when it comes to good form. He holds team records in the 100, 200, 400, and 1500 meters freestyle and has had great success at the Fina World Masters Championships and PMS Long Course Championships. Dave is currently prepping for the National Senior Games at Stanford this coming weekend. I’ll certainly pass your information along to him though!
