Sidelined with Shoulder Surgery and Missing the View

Posted by tracyb under Photo of the Day, Swimming Photos

Just about three weeks post shoulder surgery and I'm seriously missing the view from the pool...

One of the many benefits of being a U.S. Masters swimmer is being a part of a network of wonderful folks. I was given a ride to the pool recently and visited with my lane mates. Their smiles and kind words certainly helped me to forget the pain.

Photo of the Day – Congratulations Are In Order

Posted by tracyb under Lane Mates, Photo of the Day, Swimming Photos

U.S. Masters Swimmers at Tuolumne County Aquatics Masters (TCAM) are wrapping up their timed 1650-yard event this weekend. That's ONE MILE folks! I've been at the pool with my camera, and I can't begin to express to you in words just how inspiring it is to witness this annual event. Maybe this photo of 79-year-old Floyd and Coach Patti conveys the elation of completing such an impressive task.

What The Heck Was I Thinking?

Posted by tracyb under Swimming Miscellanea

We’ve established I’ve had some annoying health ‘issues’ and spent more time on a pool deck than normal this past year. Consequently, I took a lot of photos at USMS swim meets, practices, open swims, etc. In one of my far-too-frequent philanthropic moods, I offered to create a calendar for Tuolumne County Aquatics Masters (TCAM). I figured it was the least I could do: my teammates have been pretty kind about allowing me to point a camera in their direction. Proceeds from the sales will be donated to an as yet undetermined local worthy cause. (No, not my camera gear fund!) I asked Coach Patti to decide, and I certainly trust her opinion in ...

USMS Pacific Masters Short Course Meters World Record

Posted by tracyb under Swimming News, Swimming Photos

Congratulations U.S. Masters Swimmer Cokie Lepinski for setting a World Record in the 100 breaststroke at the Pacific Masters Short Course Meters Championships!!!  Here is what Cokie did in Walnut Creek:

7 swims 4 lifetime bests 1 World Record* 1 Pacific Masters record 5 First places 2 Second places (I’m pretty sure the woman who beat her in at least one of these races was much, much younger) Her new team, Marin Pirates Masters, with only 3 swimmers -  placed 18th out of 43 teams

How does Cokie feel about all of this? To quote her Facebook status, “OMG ...

Between The Pickles and Parmesan

Posted by tracyb under Swimming Miscellanea, Swimming News

Somewhere between the pickles and Parmesan, a woman asked, “Are you an athlete? You’re a swimmer aren’t you? She said I “looked athletic and had a glow” about me. My hair was dry by the time I stopped in the market after my Masters swimming workout, so that couldn’t have tipped her off. (And here I thought I had an essence of pout due to my seriously aching shoulder.) One of the countless benefits of being a U.S. Masters Swimmer – strangers stopping you to comment on your healthy glow!

The Swimming Gods Have Struck Me Down

Posted by tracyb under Swimming News

Six out of seven days in the pool was one too many last week. Or perhaps the swimming gods have struck me down for talking smack about the breaststroke. Either way, according to my doc, I’ve torn or severely strained a left intercostal muscle, and I’m out of the pool.

Excuse me while I whine… Is it just me, or are there other U.S. Masters Swimmers who take two steps forward and one step back? I had two seriously huge breakthrough moments these past two weeks. I finally grocked the breaststroke kick, and I added a couple extra feet to my glide off the wall. By ...

Why Not Hold a Swimming Convention In a Pool?

Posted by tracyb under Swimming News

I kid you not; last week on the way to the airport, a friend asked me if the swimming convention I was about to attend would be held in a pool. Was I really just in Chicago surrounded by hundreds of U.S. Masters Swimmers (USMS)? Those 3 ½ days are like a blur. Did I know * anything * about the USMS structure prior to attending that convention? Heck no! To be honest, I’m still trying to figure it out. If I understand correctly - USMS is a non-profit organization run by a Board of Directors. The new Board of Directors, who assumed their new roles on the final day of the ...
