Who Are U.S. Masters Swimmers? Trust Me, We’re Not All Here for the Medals and Ribbons.
We don’t all look good in bathing suits. We can’t all do flip turns. We’re not all entirely graceful diving off the starting blocks. In fact, many U.S. Masters Swimming members never compete in swim meets. The one thing we all likely have in common is that we enjoy the exercise, we enjoy the physical and mental benefits of exercise – and we enjoy the camaraderie of our lane mates.
I swim with a fireman, a veterinarian, a cowgirl, a college instructor, a few schoolteachers and grandparents, entrepreneurs, retirees, former collegiate swimmers and a lot of women who were ahead of ...

You know, the thing about having a blog is that readers (assuming you have them) more or less expect you to post regularly. Stop posting: you lose your readers. It’s been a struggle lately to come up with anything to blog about. This space is meant to be about my experiences with U.S. Masters Swimming, more specifically about my participation with Tuolumne County Aquatics Masters. If you’ve seen any of my more recent posts, you’ll know I had shoulder surgery, and I’ve been out of the pool since the second week of March. Not a lot of swimming going on around here. It's also about proper rest and recovery... right?

This photo was taken at the U.S. Masters Swimming Short Course Meters Championships in Walnut Creek this past fall. These properly rested swimmers, I believe, are from Tamalpais Aquatic Masters. (Note to self, next swim meet... take better notes!)

Injuries and a heavy workload prevented me from competing in triathlons this past season. (Remember, I came to U.S. Masters swimming to feel more confident in the swim portion of triathlons.) This change of plans had me hanging out at the pool more than normal which allowed me to get to know some fun, interesting folks (is it me, or are swimmers a tad less competitive than triathletes?). They've inspired me to compete in a few swim meets - assuming my numerous injuries heal. I’m not giving up on triathlons, mind you, just thinking about getting out there and seeing what I can do competitively in the pool.

U.S. Masters Swimming membership grew by 11% in 2009 and there has been a 7% growth in the number of registered USMS clubs. Accordingly, the organization "added three additional development coordinators to better serve current Masters programs as well as grow additional USMS programs." You can read the full article here.
Looks like we're catching on!
