Would They Have Saved Their Swimming Pool If It Had Been a Swim-In Instead of a Sit-In?

On Friday, a group of approximately 30 protesters took occupation of the Sedgemoor Splash Pool in the UK, armed with banners and swimming costumes.

One of the protesters commented, "Our council decided to ignore the views of 90 per cent of people and close our swimming pool. We think they want to demolish it straight away to make way for a supermarket. This is an occupation until such time the council backs off. This pool is the only amenity that this town has left, we don’t need another supermarket."

On Saturday morning, only eight remained after a total of 13 spent the night inside the building. The remaining protesters were told that council had an injunction, and they all left the site peacefully around noon.

Money from the sale of the site will go towards building a new swimming pool in Chilton Trinity Technology College, which will open in approximately three years. The council said that to bring the 18-year-old pool in accordance with current legislation, it would need to spend £4 million over the next five years. It costs £700,000 annually to maintain and run the pool.
